Iran has launched a wave of ballistic missiles at Israel with projectiles seen streaking over major cities.

Israeli media said 100 missiles were fired at the country on Tuesday as civilians were ordered to shelter in place.

It was not clear whether any of the missiles had penetrated the Iron Dome defence system.

The US said earlier that it would help defend Israel and had moved its focus into position around the country.

A senior US official also warned of “severe consequences” for Iran should a direct attack on Israel take place.
