In this video, I’m getting nerdy with extensive gouache experiments and exploring the possibilities of this versatile medium! Join me as I test four different brands of gouache for their opacity with a drawdown test, and layer other mediums on top: Prismacolor colored pencils and Caran d’Ache Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastels.
I’ll also share two color studies submitted by viewers, showing how other artists are exploring gouache.
Watch as I apply the final layer to my gouache teacup paintings, demonstrating how gouache behaves when layered and refined. I’ll also chat about my plans to mount these teacup paintings on small wood panels and ask for your input: Should I add gold leaf accents or choose a color for the sides of the panels that complements the paintings? Help me decide!
Additionally, I’ll walk you through a mini-demo and discussion on sealing gouache with cold wax medium, preserving and protecting your artwork with a professional finish.
If you’re curious about how gouache can be pushed to its limits, you're in the right place!
And there's so much more yet to be explored. Will you give it a go? I would love to see! If you do some experiments or even casual color studies and you feel like sharing, email me at colortheory@annelivingston.com . I will nerd out with you! You can keep the images private (I won't share) or public (I will share). Thank you Andrea and Jackie @JackieWolven for sharing your studies with us!
