I review the two volumes of primary Universal Horror classics on 4K UHD. There are major picture master overhauls compared to the previous Blu-rays but still have some of the quirks of that master, still contain over processed audio tracks (an issue for decades with these films on video), no new supplements and now have HDR issues added to all the films. So sadly this is a matter of several steps forward plus a few backward. There has been no news or movement on any of the other titles getting a new 4K master which to be quite frank they not only fully deserve but really need.
As I was editing this video, the sad news of David J. Skal's unfortunate passing was released. At several points in this recording I bemoaned the fact that Universal has never retransferred his incredible 1999 documentaries and that they needed more respect on the modern disc releases. This is now even more true.
