I review the immortal film noir classic LAURA (1944). One of the crown jewels of the Fox library, LAURA remains a timeless classic brilliantly produced and directed by Otto Preminger. It remains fascinating even when you know the central plot conceit and ending because the allure remains of the the eternal struggle between the real and imagined. In this way the film deals with theme VERTIGO would famously play with 14 years later. Filled with stunning visuals, a haunting score and iconic lead performances it remains a noir for the ages. Endlessly ripped off and imitated and NEVER equalled.
Fox's older Blu-ray is a solid catalog disc from them but the film really requires a new 4K master immediately. The BD is the best you can do and is thankfully better than the old DVD. Where they both fail is in the audio department. The BD is at least better than the hideously poor sounding DVD but both pale in comparison to the Laserdisc audio. The BD does port over the DVD extras and features a must listen Rudy Behlmer commentary.
