Students often struggle to distinguish between mass and weight, treating the terms as interchangeable—a misconception reinforced by everyday labels on food packaging that display grams and ounces side by side. In this video, high school physics teacher and Modeling Instruction workshop leader Aaron Debbink leads a guided investigation designed to help students separate these concepts using experimental data. By collecting and analyzing precise force measurements, students develop a model of the relationship between mass and weight, gaining a deeper, evidence-based understanding of the distinction.
Through this hands-on introductory physics lab, students use a Digital Newton Meter to measure forces at any angle with high accuracy (0.01 N to 20.00 N), replacing traditional spring scales for more reliable readings. The lab also includes spring elasticity exercises, where students stretch springs with known loads to explore how different spring constants affect force measurements. The video highlights the Spring Set, which features five different springs, with a focus on two identical springs used in the experiment.
