Games used in this episode:
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, 2011, dev. Naughty Dog
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, 2009, dev. Naughty Dog
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is the most fun I've ever had playing a video game. But coming off the back of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, I've always felt disappointed in its total package.
The problem is Among Thieves was a masterpiece of both gameplay and story, whereas it's sequel only nailed one of those elements.
Naughty Dog tried to enhance the player’s experience by creating the third title to be even more intentional with this story/gameplay dynamic, but in my opinion, they tried too hard and lost sight of what was important: creating an engaging yet organic game
The sequences in Drake's Deception were incredible to play through, but story wise, the whole adventure just seemed too unbelievable.
I think Naughty Dog decided on the story for Drake’s Deception backwards, choosing first where they wanted the player to go, and then bending the story around that, instead of just allowing the events and gameplay to unfold, organically, like they did in the previous entry in the series.
Uncharted 3 let gameplay dictate story, where Uncharted 2 did the opposite, creating what I think was a much more memorable experience.
CULT POPCORN! 60 second video essays which focus on film, television and any other type of media we consume and devour handfuls at a time.
