Is Serbia changing its position on the war in Ukraine? Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, Belgrade has faced widespread criticism for refusing to impose sanctions on Moscow and maintaining close political and economic ties with the Kremlin. However, President Aleksandar Vučić’s first wartime visit to Kyiv has raised questions about whether Serbia is now moving closer to Ukraine—and perhaps even beginning to distance itself from Russia.
In this video, I examine Serbia’s delicate balancing act between Moscow and Brussels. I look at Russia’s support for Serbia over Kosovo, the importance of European Union membership and investment, reports that Serbian ammunition has reached Ukraine, and the political significance of Vučić’s meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky. Is Serbia genuinely switching sides, or is Belgrade simply recalibrating its long-standing policy of maintaining relations with both Russia and the West?
