An innovative approach to education is changing the way teachers and students interact at Brennan Middle School in Attleboro, Massachusetts.
Instead of changing teachers every school year, students and teachers remain together for two years. Teachers say the longer relationship creates a stronger bond and gives students greater stability while allowing educators more time to understand individual needs and abilities.
The report also follows fifth-grade teacher Don Blackwell as he prepares students for a project on endangered species that will continue into the sixth grade, including a field trip to Florida.
When the multi-year teaching program was first introduced, some teachers and parents resisted the idea. But after seeing increased enthusiasm among students and improved continuity in the classroom, school officials were considering expanding assignments to three years.
