Donny Hathaway’s Story Will Break You Open in the Best Way! 🎭✨ Last night, I had the honor of meeting Donnita Hathaway, the youngest daughter of the legendary Donny Hathaway, at the opening night reception of Twisted Melodies at Northlight Theatre. I was not ready for the emotional masterpiece I was about to witness.
This production is not just a show…it’s an experience. It’s a journey into the brilliant, tortured mind of a soul who gave us some of the greatest music of our time. Donny Hathaway’s genius lit up the world, but behind that brilliance was a deep battle with mental illness that far too many suffer through in silence.
Watching Twisted Melodies was like watching A Beautiful Mind, but this one came wrapped in the unmistakable soundtrack of our souls. 🎶 If you love music… if you’ve ever known pain, or joy, or mental health struggles, or just want to better understand them… you will feel this production in your bones.
Donnita and I shared real words before and after the show, but after I saw her father’s story unfold on that stage…I just wanted to hug her. And she received it. 🙏🏾 Because through the singing and clapping to my Donny Hathaway favorites, I felt his pain. I felt his mind. And I left with deeper understanding and reverence.
This is a show our entire community needs to see - especially us. We’ve been taught to keep going, to stay in motion, to survive. But mental health touches us too, and we need to make space to feel it, name it, and heal from it.
