Today I started what might be the most absurd lesson I've ever tried with students — a full-on Brain Rot Writing Project.
If you teach teens, you already know the terms: “6.7,” “low taper fade,” random internet chaos… the stuff that absolutely melts their brains. I don’t even like brain rot content, but my students love it — so I decided to turn it into a narrative writing challenge.
Students pick a ridiculous image (like a shark wearing sneakers 🤷♂️) and write the story of what happened before and after the moment in the picture.
Is it silly? Yes.
Does it work? Also yes.
Leaning into what students love — even when it feels ridiculous — is sometimes the bridge to engagement. My classes have been locked in for two days straight. Stay tuned for the full breakdown soon.
