Ever have students read an entire page… and have no clue what they just read?
After 20 years in the classroom, here are 5 simple strategies that actually work:
✔️ Read in class (not at home)
✔️ Change seating for focus
✔️ Use the right background music
✔️ Model reading for your students
✔️ Give them something to do with the text
👇 Grab my FREE reading strategies here:
1. Write one sentence summarizing what you just read.
2. Write one question you still have.
3. Highlight one confusing part and explain why it’s confusing.
4. Find one important quote and explain why it matters.
5. Make a prediction about what will happen next.
6. Connect something in the text to your life or the real world.
7. Describe a character using one piece of evidence.
8. Draw a quick sketch of a scene or idea from the reading.
9. Rewrite a key moment in your own words.
10. Identify the most important word on the page and explain why.
11. Track how a character changed in this section.
12. Write a “what surprised me” sentence.
13. Write a “this reminds me of…” connection (book, movie, life).
14. Create a one-sentence theme statement.
15. Pick one line and explain it like you’re teaching a friend.
16. Write a text message a character might send in this moment.
17. Give this section a title.
18. List three key events that just happened.
19. Find a pattern or repeated idea and explain it.
20. Write one thing the author did well in this section.
Got a strategy that works for you? Drop it in the comments—let’s help each other out.
Peace.
