Confused about the difference between an accommodation and a modification? You’re not alone. Teachers ask this question all the time — especially when looking at IEPs or 504 plans.

Here’s the quick breakdown:

🔹 Accommodation = Same work, different access.
It doesn’t change what students learn — just how they access it. Think audio books, chunking directions, flexible seating, extended time, or using tools like ChatGPT to simplify directions.

🔹 Modification = Different work, different expectations.
It does change the assignment. Fewer problems. A paragraph instead of an essay. A lower lexile text. An oral response instead of a written one.

These aren’t shortcuts or ways of “making work easier.” They’re about meeting students where they are — just like giving Braille to a blind student instead of telling them to “try harder.”
