The 80’s were the golden age of 4x4s in the US. We had Fall Guy’s square body Chevy, and Marty McFly’s bad ass black Toyota. But in 1986 Nissan released a Hardbody with a 3.0L V6 and to keep up, Toyota put their 22re Turbo engine in the Pickup and 4Runner. the awesome 4 cylinder turbo engine, widely loved for being bulletproof and powerful, was a rare option for the 4Runner and Truck for only two years when it was replaced by the much hated 3.0 v6. Now known as the 2 Point SLOW, that engine, came in the second gen 4Runner, the pickup from ’88 -’95 and the T-100 from 1992 - 1994.
So, when you see a first gen 4Runner or Toyota pickup with a silver turbo badge on the back, know that it’s legit, not like all the posers slapping TRD Pro badges on their old Toyota's.
All this is in prep for this week’s episode, a scrap video of clips I shot while shooting three other videos with Harry Wagner for the Driving Line YouTube channel. We had two turbo toyotas running support for the two jeeps which were being featured in the Driving Line content. Ian brought his 1986 Turbo 4Runner on 40’s and I rode along in Harry’s 1987 Turbo truck Jr. Mint driven by Dave Wiggins.
Both these trucks performed amazingly, and it was a treat to see them wheel on the world famous Rubicon Trail!
