Artist Jayasri Burman enchants with a visual language that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. She takes a lyrical turn with Tumi, Ma, a book of Bengali poetry where she traces life’s contradictions– love and longing, despair and hope– and musings on art with an invocation of nature. The written and unwritten intersect with over 100 inspired artworks. Arunava Sinha, acclaimed translator of You, Mother into English, is a prolific voice in classic, modern and contemporary Bengali fiction, non-fiction and poetry. In conversation with Sanjoy K. Roy, Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, they explore the interplay of image and text, memory and imagination, and the journey of poetry across languages.
Recipient of the National Award in 1985, Jayasri Burman is a celebrated contemporary Indian artist known for her vivid, narrative-rich creations that intertwine traditional Indian art with modern themes. A graduate of Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, Burman remains a pivotal figure in Indian art. Her works feature intricate patterns and vibrant colors inspired by Hindu mythology, often portraying powerful women, peacocks, etc., exploring cultural narratives on mythology, nature, spirituality, and femininity.
Arunava Sinha translates classic and contemporary fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, from Bengali and Hindi, into English. Over 90 of his translations have been published so far in India, the UK, the USA, and Australia. He teaches at Ashoka University, where he is also the co-director of the Ashoka Centre for Translation.
Sanjoy K. Roy, an entrepreneur of the arts, is Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, which produces over 33 festivals in 42 cities and 17 countries, including the world’s largest literary gathering at the Jaipur Literature Festival and international editions of JLF. He is a founder-trustee of Salaam Baalak Trust, working to provide support services for street and working children in the inner city of Delhi where over 1,30,000 children have benefited from education, training and residential services. Roy is the Co-chair of the Art and Culture Committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and former President of Event and Entertainment Management Association. He lectures at and works in collaboration with leading universities across the world and has been conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa by University of York, UK, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts and society.
