I think I've always been interested in characters who do cross boundaries who break taboos who are stepping into a new world and as many of you know my protagonists are generally women And for women it's especially I think resonant because there are so many boundaries placed around us that you know anything you want to do you're kind of breaking a boundary So that's been important for me right from my first book of fiction which is the short story collection Arranged Marriage where I'm talking about immigrant women who find themselves here in the United States and immediately of course they've broken a boundary just by coming here but then there are many other boundaries they need to break But also in the epics my characters Draupadi and Sita are constantly breaking boundaries and getting into trouble Sita actually crosses the boundary line that has been placed around her.
