I know this is not a physics lesson but it might as well be one. Newton's 3rd Law states that a force in one direction gets an equal and opposite force in the other. (I know that is an overly simplified version.)
When you hit hot steel on an anvil with a hammer the hammer exerts force down on the steel and the Anvil exerts force up into the piece. So if you want to put a point on the end of a piece of steel you need to hold it at an angle to the anvil and hit it at an angle with the hammer.
