I picked up some Ball Bearings from eBay to forge some ball punches.
This was my first one. I wanted to make sure this would work before making more of various sizes.
I took a piece of car coil spring (5160) and straightened it and then forged the body octagon and tapered the end. Then welded on the 3/4 inch or 20mm ball bearing with 7018 welding rods.
I heat treated the 5160 by quenching in water and let the heat from the handle temper it some. Also the weld would help temper it as well.
