Let's try some medieval fashion advice from a 13th century book of dating tips! The Romance of the Rose has a solid passage advice for how to dress on dates, and some of it is surprisingly familiar.

What was medieval flirting like? I didn't expect dating tips from the middle ages to be relatable, but it turns out courtly love and medieval romance books transcend centuries! While medieval dating advice for women is probably not going to help a modern person's love life, historical dating and medieval courtship is far from the expectations we have of chivalric romance in literature. The history of dating tips is just as full of silly nonsense as it is today, and for those of us who are single on Valentine's Day, it's a very needed laugh.

Sure, historical romance books talk about medieval dating as though it was all chivalric love and dignified courting, but the Romance of the Rose and Chaucer's Wife of Bath from the Canterbury tales have some surprisingly apt advice! Regardless of whether your relationship involves chivalric love, these texts talk about all sorts of issues that haven't gone away since the middle ages. Everything from medieval fashion advice to what to do about men who like to read concerning things about women features in these books. The more one reads medieval history facts, the more one realizes that the real medieval history myths are the ones that suggest we have nothing in common!
