Hi again, all! After Dresden, in our European adventures, came Prague! Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic. We spent 4 days here and really enjoyed the food, the culture, the sites, and the people!
We ate Garlic and Cheese Soup, Kürtőskalács (or Chimney Cakes. A Hungarian cinnamon and sugary pastry), Pork…everything (they REALLY love their pork here), potato pancakes, beef goulash, and more! To drink we enjoyed an amazing carbonated drink called Kofola. It was created when Czechoslovakia was still a country. They didn’t have Coca-Cola yet so the government actually hired people to try and mimic the drink! It doesn’t really come close, but it’s DELICIOUS! It’s less sweet and less carbonated and I truly loved it (and I’m not normally a soda drinker). We also tried Absinth!
We had plenty of time to explore the city and took two tours which all start at Old Town Square. The medieval Astronomical Clock is located there along with many street performers. It’s the world’s oldest functioning astronomical clock and is considered very disappointing by many tourists..., but it’s over 605 years old, guys…what do you expect?! We explored up to the Prague Castle where the President was sitting and within the castle walls was St. Vitus Cathedral which took 600 years to build and was beautiful! The view from up there was awesome. We walked across the historic Charles Bridge (named after King Charles IV) and took a relaxing boat ride to see the city from the water. We wandered around the Jewish Quarter and learned about its incredibly depressing history (which I won’t go into detail about in order not to cry again), but loved the Hebrew clock in which the clock marker was under the false impression that it should go counter-clockwise since Hebrew is read right to left. Since he put so much effort into making them happy they kept the clock as is!
After one of the tours, we walked across another bridge to take a million steps up to a biergarten. We were told it was mostly used by locals and that certainly seemed to be the case. It was in this lovely park filled with skaters, people walking, dogs running around and kids playing. It was a great place to enjoy the view with a brew (yay rhyming!) and relax a bit by the giant metronome.
