The United States is reassessing its military presence in Europe as President Donald Trump steps up pressure on NATO allies over defence spending and their commitment to the alliance.
The review will consider whether European countries are taking greater responsibility for the continent’s security and meeting their pledge to increase military expenditure. It comes after Washington criticised its allies over their reluctance to join the US in the war with Iran.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has vowed to reduce the alliance’s reliance on Washington. But with Trump repeatedly questioning America’s long-term commitment to NATO, the outcome of the review could have major consequences.
So, as Washington weighs Europe’s commitment to its own defence, could a poor assessment push the US closer to withdrawing from NATO?
