US President Donald Trump has announced that he will lift sanctions imposed on Türkiye over its purchase of Russian defence missiles and signaled a willingness to sell the key Nato ally F-35 fighter jets.
In the first visit to Türkiye by a US president in 11 years, Trump was welcomed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the airport with a lavish state ceremony for this years’ critical Nato leaders’ summit.
Nato officials say that the 2026 summit in Ankara is critical in moving the alliance to a 'Nato 3.0' stage, where it is less reliant on the US and builds up defence production and technology across member states.
