President Trump signed an executive order Thursday renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” for official U.S. government use.
It does not force Canada, New York, Google, or the public to change the name. Federal maps, contracts, and the Geographic Names Information System must use Lake America within 30 days.
This comes amid a U.S.–Canada trade war after talks collapsed and 50% tariffs hit about $20 billion in Canadian goods. Canada is answering with matching counter-tariffs.
The name Ontario is Indigenous — “lake of shining waters” — and older than both countries. Prime Minister Mark Carney and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul say they will keep calling it Lake Ontario.
