A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Hokkaido, Japan near Urakawa (33 km SSW of Honchō) on August 23, 2026 at 13:44:53 UTC.

The quake occurred at a depth of 42.9 km and registered a maximum seismic intensity of 4 on Japan’s scale. The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed no tsunami warning was issued.
This was a thrust (reverse) faulting earthquake, with the preferred fault plane striking 220° and dipping 25°. It is related to the ongoing subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Okhotsk Plate along the southern Kuril Trench / northern Japan Trench region
