A powerful M5.5 shallow earthquake struck near Sicaya, Peru on July 18, 2026 at 9:24 PM local time, causing significant damage in the Junín region. Multiple homes collapsed in Chongos Bajo and Pumpunya, a historic church and ancient cross were damaged, and at least 5 people were killed with dozens injured. Strong shaking was felt in Huancayo and parts of Lima.
