A magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck 4 km north of San Leandro, CA on August 13, 2026 at 8:30 a.m. PDT. The quake was centered near the Oakland Zoo area at a shallow depth of 5.2 km and was widely felt across the Bay Area, including Oakland, San Francisco, Walnut Creek, and beyond.
Initial reports listed the magnitude as high as 4.1 before it was revised to 3.8. The moment tensor solution shows primarily strike-slip motion, consistent with the Hayward Fault system.
No major damage or injuries have been reported. BART temporarily reduced speeds for safety inspections.
The Hayward Fault is a major right-lateral strike-slip fault that runs along the eastern side of San Francisco Bay. It is part of the larger San Andreas Fault system.
