Tijuana has closed the animal section at Parque Morelos after an audit exposed years of neglect, poor conditions, and administrative failures. Around 160 animals now need new homes, and officials are asking the San Diego Zoo and other facilities for help.
The closure followed the death of Mandy, a Bengal tiger who died of a heart attack linked to being overweight. Investigators also found expired medications and reports of past animal deaths. In 2019, merchants claimed 70–80 animals had died from neglect over two years.
