Tropical Storm Irene struck Connecticut on Aug. 28, 2011, bringing a destructive storm surge, widespread flooding and massive power outages. The storm knocked down countless trees, pushed rivers out of their banks and caused severe damage along the shoreline, including in East Haven and Fairfield. Hundreds of thousands lost power, and two Connecticut residents died in the storm. Irene ultimately caused more than $15 billion in damage nationwide.
