South west of Lisboa, on the Atlantic south of the Tagus is the 33 km Costa da Caparica, said to be the longest bathing beach in Europe. Part of the beach has been made accessible by a light railway of 600 mm gauge. It runs 8km southwards from Praia do Sol to Fonte da Telha. Open-sided carriages are hauled by locomotives built between 1962 and 1974 by Christoph Schottler of Diepholz, Germany with Mercedes diesel engines. They are turned at the end of each journey by a hand operated turntable.
