Transformers Retro Deluxe Wheelie (G1 Toy Colors) is actually a pretty good figure when you look at it on its own. The plastic feels solid, the transformation is decent and even a bit fun, and the scale works better when you put him next to the Studio Series 86 crew. It fits more naturally than some of the earlier attempts, so from a display standpoint, it does its job well.
Where it gets a bit confusing is the why. This isn’t a bad figure at all, it’s just one of those releases where you pause and wonder who exactly this was meant for. Collector feedback is generally that it’s a nice execution with that toy-inspired look, but it’s also a very specific version of a character that wasn’t exactly at the top of most wish lists. It feels like a solid figure searching for a clear audience.
End of the day, it’s good, it’s fun, and it works better than expected in a lineup. I’m just not entirely convinced this was something people were really asking for in the first place.
