With a whole day to go roughly 400 miles, and with modern traffic to dodge, the excursion of Union Pacific 3976 is one that brought the locomotive and the trackage it covers back to the limelight. This mainline excursion, sponsored by Coal County Rail History Inc., spans over two routes that represent an all day outing. The Coal County Railroad, also known as the Quahog Sub, encompasses big cities, the Pacific coast, and numerous loops around mountain ranges with breathtaking scenery and scores of industries. The South Bay Commuter route is a less detailed, yet vibrant representation of moving passengers and freight through the Central Valley to the Bay Area.
