Hey Guys and Gals here we have the 3rd releases of the most current batch of Trackmaster releases from late 2013 its Duck's close shave! I got this on ebay along with Porter and Muddy Ferdinand so lets see if the cheaping out by Trackmaster continues!
As soon as I had the locomotive in my hand I could see and feel the lack of quality in the construction and of the plastics used to make the chassis, it looks and feels like recycled trashcan plastic which is a shame. It really does not look like it was built to last more than a few years at most and the molded in traction tires also point this fact out. even the molding of the underframe and inside the shell is very rough and their cost cutting in this area is a disgrace, also I noticed the safety valve cover which is painted in all previous versions is unpainted this time and the short covered truck with opening doors is the cheapest nastiest thing I have ever seen ( no the cheapest nastiest thing I ever saw was muddy Ferdinands truck), it does run very well though which we will cover now.
When fitted with a C size battery the motor hummed to life with an almost silent buzzing sound, it is a very smooth runner this one which is very surprising after Duck's powerline repair which I reviewed previously was such a terrible runner (constant clicking and surging), So this version is very smooth running but not fast by any means, it also performed very well in the hill climb and on the turntable.
So overall despite the horrible build quality this is a good runner that looks decent until you flip it over, the stickers are well placed and silver handrail is a nice detail, the shaving cream could have been done so much better and I have no idea why this new version even exists when there was an excellent earlier release of this same loco. Its just a money grab basically as they like to release in groups of 3 engines now. So look out for the next money grab from Fisher Price Trackmaster.
I give this Train a score of 6/10 Nice running cannot save this products terrible material and build quality, just sloppy lazy and cheap seem to be the keywords at Trackmaster these days.
