UP Development Driver, Craig Coker, took our UP 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance to Buttonwillow Raceway Park for extensive testing of the car in stock form, and then with two phases of UP parts through grueling temperatures peaking at 116 degrees.

The goal was not to set record times. This was our first time out and conditions and temperatures were not optimal. Instead, the goal was to test and get objective and subjective data about the car in stock form as well as with UP parts. We use the feedback we get from Craig, and the data from track mode to guide our validation and development of the Model 3 Performance.

Stock Run 0:35
Craig started out with the car in stock form. First lap of the day, air temperature was already 94 degrees. The brakes overheated during the hot lap, and both motors warmed up by the end of the lap, while the battery got hot, it also fluctuated and saw quick temperature drops in fast braking zones which is a big improve from the last gen car. Craig ran a 2: 01.91 as a baseline for this testing session.

Phase 1 4:45
We then moved into Phase 1, adding UP parts right at the track to get back-to-back feedback and data. Phase 1 was a grouping of common parts for customers that want more out of their daily drivers without any sacrifice to comfort. We were very pleased with the results, despite it being 105 degrees by this point. The car became much more balanced and stable at speed in the corners. It became much more planted and predictable, giving the driver much more confidence. The net result was a 1: 57.93, about a 4 second improvement. While the times were significantly improved, Craig was most impressed by the improvement from the driver’s seat. You’ll notice motor temps are even higher on this run, as cooling between sessions at 105 degrees is challenging.

Phase 1 Upgrades: Entry point for track goers, or canyon carvers, this setup offers more comfort for everyday driving AND more performance when you want it
- UP Dual Rate Linear Lowering Springs - Super Performance 1.5” drop
- UP Street & Track Front & Rear Sway Bars
- 20” UP-03 Forged Wheels (20x9.5 F / 20x10.5 R)
- Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Tires (265/35 20 F / 285/35 20 R)

Phase 2 12:03
Next we dial up the UP parts offering going into phase 2, which is a deeper dive into the UP parts catalog for optimized performance. As Craig states in the video, this is where it gets interesting for him. We installed our Race Pro coilovers, which now that the car comes with electronic adaptive dampers, requires our new Adaptive Suspension Canceller Kit to prevent error codes and limiters that also blocks track mode. We also put the UP carbon ceramic front BBK to tackle the overheating we were experiencing with the factory brakes. Race sway and the full suite of UP suspension arms, including adjustable front upper control arms, rear camber and toe arms, and more allow us to dial a track-focused alignment for the wider UP-03 Forged wheels and Michelin Cup 2 R tires, the same tires that comes on the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

We did two runs with this setup. In the first, Craig ran a 1: 55.4, or 6.5 seconds off stock. On the second run, he was flying and came into BRP’s last turn, Sunset, a little too hot costing him an estimated 2-3 seconds. Final time on that second run was 1: 56.xx, despite the 110+ degree temps.

Phase 2 Upgrades: For the track enthusiast looking to cut down their M3P lap times while still retaining street-car status
- UP Race Pro Coilovers
- UP Suspension Canceller Kit
- UP Carbon Ceramic Front BBK
- UP Street & Track Front Sway Bar
- UP Race Rear Sway Bar
- UP Adjustable billet Suspension Arms
- 19” UP-03 Forged Wheels (19x10.5 square)
- Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R Tires (275/35 19 F / 305/30 19 R)

At the end of the testing days we are very pleased with the Model 3 Performance platform. It’s impressive in stock form and reacted to UP upgrades just as we’d hoped. Being able to run coilovers to allow for fine tuning of the dampers is a great upgrade for those looking for that heightened handling experience, and the new UP Adaptive Suspension Canceller Kit performed flawlessly.
