After shooting down the stalactite, jumping to the edge of the vines causes you to grab them slightly lower than if you were to grab them standing.
If you jump to grab, you have to climb up seven times before you can climb sideways, but if you grab standing you only have to climb up six times to be able to climb sideways. Upwards climbing is slower than sideways climbing, meaning it's faster to grab the vines standing unless you get a seemingly rare two handed grab.
