In Fun and Games, Toyman isn’t your typical Superman villain. He’s a broken man whose obsession with lost innocence drives him to extremes, while Bruno Mannheim exploits the world for profit and control. Frankly, he feels like he should be running around Gotham, causing mischief for the Caped Crusader.
This episode of Superman: The Animated Series may look colourful on the surface, but underneath it’s a story about trauma, obsession, and what we do with the things that shape us.
I explore how this episode mirrors the psychological depth of Batman: The Animated Series, turning familiar childhood icons into tools of revenge, and placing Superman between two extremes: one who clings to the past, and one who profits from it.
This is a rare moment where STAS shows it can be as emotionally complex as BTAS, all while keeping the action, comedy, and sci-fi thrills alive.
If you enjoy deep character studies of animated villains, comparisons between BTAS and STAS, and insights into the storytelling brilliance of Warner Bros. Animation, this one’s for you.
