Lately, the western fangame demo dropped out of nowhere and basically went all out, steamrolling everything on the path. Even FDF III demo does not seem so shiny anymore. That's some giga chad energy here lmao.
Yep, what they said is true - it really is THAT good. One of those rare occurrences where pretty much everything is done right and works altogether.
The graphics and presentation, stages design, colors used, banger music, lots of QoL stuff baked into it... and the gameplay is damn awesome! Could count even more things I love about this demo.
Basically, it wipes out every other fangame easily, with the whole presentation and gameplay you get from this demo alone.
-----
The gameplay and system is pretty much a dopamine rush, a lot of stuff happens everywhere.
Not gonna lie, stages require a lot of planning and routing, but if done right they reward you lavishly.
If the bosses alone weren't dynamic and bright enough with their patterns, then we get even more - a boss fight synced with the music! To be exact, the Miko boss fight. But I think it's better to show than to explain - just see it yourself, it's so epic. Basically IKUSAAAAAAAN!, but you can shoot down the attacks instead of having a forced timeout.
But how it's done is also an interesting thing. There's a cumulative countdown across the first 2 nons and 3 spells, then another one across 4 more spells and a nonspell.
It works even better, since when timed exactly, you enter the survival spell just when the music enters the bridge section.
-----
The system here is lining up 5 tokens of the same color.
There is classic red, green and blue colors giving live or bomb pieces, or PoV items.
The rarer rainbow token grants all three, dropped by some enemies on stage and as a reward for capturing spellcard and timing kills on spells and nonspells. They can also match with any token color.
When collecting token, bullets around you get canceled and you gain some i-frames. Getting five of a kind gives a bigger cancel and 2 full seconds of i-frames.
Comes in handy when you want to chain multiple tokens together - Stage 3 shows it very nicely.
Getting a certain amount of token line-ups in a stage unlocks a Last Spell.
On boss fights, you can get a "Nicely Timed!" bonus, which you can get on nons and spells.
It grants an extra rainbow token when acquired. On spells it also doubles the spell capture bonus.
The mechanism is actually really simple - just kill the boss when it is "charging". Basically, when effect circle appears and collapses, and characteristic sound effect plays.
Many enemies shoot revenge bullets on death, which can be mitigated by pointblanking.
The pointblanking is also good on medium and big enemies having a colored aura, as they drop the additional piece on death when killed in close range - of course, piece depending on the color.
The base strategy here is to chain the tokens into five of a kind as much as possible.
Do not be afraid of pointblanking - it is actually very helpful in this game.
Kill the bosses' attacks within "Nicely Timed!" window for most tokens, as explained above.
Some strats you can see in this video. Many other No Bomb runs also contain useful routes, so check them out.
-----
Not gonna lie, it is an awesome fangame, one-of-a-kind I'd say with all the stuff packed into it. Much I've explained in the beginning, so not gonna repeat that here.
I must say it, the Lunatic difficulty here is just BRUTAL. For real. A lot of routing and a lot of attempts to make a reasonable clear.
And that's just first three stages, we're just halfway there lmao. With a 45 minutes gameplay in the full release, it will be a real challenge.
But it is so rewarding to learn it, once you overcome all the obstacles after many, many practice sessions. Feels like playing arcade games once again - a lot of practicing, for that one incredible run.
I've heard that the current Lunatic gonna be rebranded, and we will get a more adjusted difficulty in its place. Well, this one might be an "Overdrive" difficulty then.
And yeah, Marisa here is not well balanced...
While Reimu has smaller hitbox with weaker shot, Marisa has... not much better shot, proving not so effective in a Miko bossfight. Ichrin is currently the most tricky one, but with her focused speed she's kinda unusable.
Also, guess this one is made in Danmakufu. This is just marvelous, I didn't notice it until much later into the game lmao

![[DF] Touhou Danmakufu: -永遠の魔法塔- (Eternal Magic Tower)
Browsing through some older scripts, Ive found this one entry from 2007 and a pending replay I havent recorded yet. Feels kinda like Pathouli boss rush or Extra Stage of some sort. Well, as for the script from 2k07 its not too bad, rather nice if I would say so myself :V

![Touhou 东方琴鼓歌 ~ TDaMR v4.1.3 || XING「ginkiha」 [Perfect]
Song: XING「ginkiha」(From Muse Dash)
Track 1-4 of 东方琴鼓歌 ~ Thunder Drum and Mysterious Rhythm.
Difficulty: Hard 8. Final rank: Omega. Final score: 10,000,000.
[ Overview ]
Thunder Drum and Mysterious Rhythm is a Touhou fangame based on LuaSTG engine, made by 吃药图书 (https://space.bilibili.com/24053931) - the same guy responsible for LuaSTG Multi-Boss Rush (https://youtu.be/NIakZN6b9Nw) and Gensokyos Day and Night Incident (https://youtu.be/9NFK3XvbcNs).
The game combines Touhou with osu!s three game modes: Mania, Taiko and Catch the Beat. During all 60 tracks available across various difficulty levels, one will have to dodge the bullets, and also tap to the beat - during Mania, Taiko or CtB sections!
Sometimes youll face one of these, sometimes all of them, or even alternating rapidly on the most difficult ones.
All the tracks have awesome Touhou remixes of various kind. Recently it expanded, using even songs from popular rhythm songs! (And not gonna lie, Im quite concerned about legal use of them.)
[ Song Packs & Difficulties ]
As of v4.1.1 there are 11 song packs, in which most of songs will contain Easy/Normal/Hard version of songs. Sometimes Lunatic songs are present, which usually are way higher than an ordinary song.
The difficulty split is a result of recent v4.0.0 major update. Before that, most of songs had only one given difficulty, thus giving some relief for novices, and some extra difficulty for more experienced players.
Each song has a number indicating a real difficulty level (aka Arcaea notation). Only a few of them have level 10 and above, and are just crazy.
These of lower number might have one or two rhythm modes along the dodging. Mode switching is distinct.
As the level goes higher, more modes are used and are usually tougher, especially visible in Mania tracks. One should expect more Hard/Lunatic level bullet barrage too.
[ Ability Points ]
As with v4.0.0, the game introduced Ability Points. They measure overall players performance. Depending on the map, its difficulty (assigned level value) and players performance, one will gain or lose the points with consecutive runs.
It changes with each completed run. The exact formula is unknown to me, but surely depends on relationship between your AP level and maps level. Having a bad run on easier map while your AP is high will lower it down. OTOH having a great run on Hard/Lunatic run with low/moderate AP will substantially raise it. Nothing unusual in it I guess.
Apart from it, player levels from v2.0.0 are still there. Since you gain XP with each run, Id rather treat them as How much time Ive already wasted.
[ Achievements ]
The game contains achievements, and they have various rarity.
Some require perfecting/FC X amount of times, some perfecting certain song/difficulty, some are usually given when one meets certain conditions, like perfecting the map but having only one player hit, or score going negative (Yes, it is possible, very easily).
Requirements are unfortunately in Chinese, which doesnt help in acquiring them. Try your best nonetheless!

![Touhou 东方琴鼓歌 ~ TDaMR || V/A Tracks Compilation (Level Packs 3, 4, 6 & 7)
Alright, with that Level Pack I only have like several songs to beat. These includes changed songs across Level Packs 3 to 7 of about the same length as this pack, plus some others like Acceleration on Hard (Track 11-1) and Marisa Stole the Precious Thing (Track 1-3).
Other than that - were done with the game! Then I can move on to recent fangames like Touhou Multi Scroll Shooting 2. Stay tuned!

![Touhou: Bubbling Imaginary Treasures (v1.02a) || Lunatic 1 Miss No Bomb No Special Clear
Touhou BIT is out for some time, and I have finally some spare time to jump into Touhou universe again! So then, lets make some runs.
To be fair, I was aiming for LNNN, but when making 1.02a update, Gore though it would be a great idea to uncomment some code for the ultimate spellcard, and make it ultra difficult compared to the rest of the game. Good job man, I feel betrayed lol.
東方門殊銭 ~ Bubbling Imaginary Treasures is a third... I guess? Touhou fan-game made by Gorenshi. Full game was released at 11 November 2021. As with the other of their games, this one also mixes several Touhou games by partially imcorporating their mechanics or boss patterns. There are many references to Touhou 11 SA and Touhou 12 UFO, even as to tell that Extra stage is a kinda reproduction of one known from Touhou 11 (at least stage-portion-wise).
Two updates were rolled out, improving performance a little, as well as changing some patterns, like ultimate spellcard.
There are four playable characters to choose from: Reimu, Marisa, Sanae and Komachi, each with three different shot-types, bombs and special abilities (aka Skills or Assist Spirit Strike). Gathering enough money enables the player to use a skill, and depending on player character it can have various effects.
For the record, there is an achievements/trophies system known from recent Touhou games.
[ HP system ]
As with Gores previous game - Franticallt Forbidden Fruit - here we also get HP bar. Once you get hit, your HP decreases. If by any chance your HP would be decreased to zero, it will be set to 1 HP, but then the next hit will result in a miss and losing a life.
HP taken from a hit is not random. It depends on a hitbox of a bullet (in pixels I assume) x4 + skills level x2. When it is a laser, it is fixed to 100. When player is not in focus mode, damage is doubled up.
Sanae can halve the damage when in skills mode.
[ Mechanics of the game ]
Game borrows mechanics known from Touhou SA and Touhou DDC, and its very apparent. The multiplier from gathering items can go from x0.50 to x5.00, eventually getting much higher when PIV multiplier is applied, up to x9.99.
It has several thresholds, at which selected number of resources are dropped (from 1 to 4) depending on items collected and multiplier achieved. It will also make clearing circle bigger. At x5.00 and higher, it will cover nearly all the screen, even with the player at the very bottom of the screen.
Players skills can be activated once one gather enough money. They can be collected through grazing, clearing the bullets, dropped from killed enemies and at the end of stages when your performance is calculated. The effect of skill depends on shot-type chosen.
[ My thoughts on BIT? ]
Honestly? I expected some better fangame coming out from them. I mean, this being half a rip-off of patterns from official games is just a part of the problem. I mean, we still have Stage 5, 6 and Extra stage bosses with more unique patterns. Notice I have said half a rip-off.
For the biggest problem out there: there is no survival play here. Not in this game. Seriously. Since the only option is a HP system (no insta-death mode), plus one is provided with Assist Spirit Strike/skills system which is powerful on its own, and pretty much unbalanced characters that can take off most of bosses in an instant... well, where is a difficulty in it then, when anyone can beat this game effortlessly?
Sure, I have taken some hits here and there (guess I had enough of the game already), its not like its ultra free so anyone can pull off a perfect run instantly. And yet, it is that easy given that system. Its horrible.
And the second biggest problem: performance. My 7yrs old PC and Win10 system cannot handle it such that it wouldnt lag every so often. So, I had to use my Win7 build from TWC to handle it, and even then there were lags during recording, even with some effects cut. Plus, memory leaks all over there, which eventually slows down the game dramatically. Like, please, its the first thing you should have fixed instead of the ultimate attack...
Otherwise, the game would be fine. Quite average, compared to the rest of Touhou fangames out there, even some Western ones. But still a fangame :V
