Many years ago a dear friend, Mike Posner gave me a cassette of Pete Townshend demos. Two tracks always stood out to me. Two I had never heard. This being the first one and Don't Let Go the Coat being the other. Keep in mind this collection leaned heavily on the Quad period demos. I'm One, Punk Meets the Godfather, Drowned among them. Some of the strongest and most popular tunes among Who Heads. But these two songs would get stuck in my head for days on end. I wore out that cassette and it really started my quest to find anything and everything PT ever released. Mike also introduced me to the worlds of bootlegs and 4 track recording with the later starting an obsession of recording music that I pursue to this day.
My friend is no longer with us but when I hear or play these songs I think of Mike and what we would be jamming on now. Or what band we would be having an unrelenting field day critiquing. Maybe the newest up and coming band or maybe ripping a classic recording to sherds to amuse ourselves. It was all in good fun and provide us hours of stoner entertainment where Mike would keep up with me hit for hit. While the rest of the room would be curled up in the fetal position craving a Twinkie or bag of Doritos.
