Impression of arrival of the fish.
Near Tanji in the Gambia lies a nature reserve, but it is also a fishing village. During a morning walk, we had already spotted dozens of colourful wooden fishing boats out at sea; in the afternoon, they return with their catch. There is also a larger boat with so many men on board that it is listing heavily to one side. Men are working hard. On the boat, the men are putting the catch into large crates. Others balance crates of fish from the boat on their heads and wade through the water onto the beach. Women with plastic bags scavenge for fish that have fallen out of the crates. At the small market, they sit together, also selling fish. On the beach, other men stand in a row with empty wheelbarrows. The crates are tipped into them. The wheelbarrows are wheeled to a lorry, where the catch disappears into crates filled with ice. One man stands on the beach counting how many crates are being brought ashore. We are told that everyone bringing the catch ashore has been hired by a fish processing company.
