PODCAST SEASON 5 - OVERLAND THROUGH SOUTHEAST ASIA
We head back to the central waterway of Amphawa early in the morning. Tour boats are around in abundance, but apart from one or two restaurant boats, there is no floating market to be seen. However, the shops are ice. We continue to the floating market of Tha Kha. Here we still see the traditional boats with fruit and vegetables that are paddled around by men and women with the characteristic lampshade hats under a parasol. It is certainly not the number of boats from the past, but it looks authentic. Then we struggle through increasingly busy traffic to a hotel in a suburb of Bangkok.
Thai silk weavers in Ban Krua supplied silk to the Thai silk company founded in 1948. One or two weaving mills should still exist. We find the weaving mill in a picturesque neighbourhood, but there is no weaving. Judging by the looms, that has been the case for a long time. Part of public transport in Bangkok is by boats running up and down the river. It's a fun way to see life on the waterfront.
We visit the Grand Palace. It is unbelievable how richly decorated everything is. Everywhere we see (tin) gold and paintings. We also see the famous Emerald Buddha.
We close the day with an evening dinner cruise.
