Hiking and backpacking can be tough of a mild day but hiking and backpacking in heat can be really hard and even life threatening if you do not prepare. In this video I go through hints and tips to ensure your thru hiking and backpacking trip go smoothly.

Preparation is key. In extreme heat, you can't afford to make mistakes. However, done correctly, you will have a thoroughly enjoyable adventure.

Here is a list of hiking and backpacking hints and tips:

Hydration:
Hydrate up to 4 days prior to your adventure
Take plenty of water with you. II highly recommend a hydration reservoir.
Use electrolyte taps during your hike

Hiking gear:
Wear light coloured clothing
Materials like Heatgear, Coolmax, etc are designed to keep you cool
Summer base layers create a layer between your skin and outer
Use light, breathable clothing
Long sleeve tops and bottoms block out the sun but will reduce breathability
Trail runners and hiking shoes increase comfort and reduce fatigue
Sunglasses and a hat are essentials. An umbrella is optional.

Routes and Devices:
Fatigue can hit you quickly. Make sure you have a shorter Plan B route
If using a GPS device, try and keep the map offline if possible
A backup map is worth taking too
Safety devices like the Garmin inReach Mini 2 and Garmin Messenger can save your life (or others) if an accident occurs

Prior to starting:
Check the weather forecast and look for weather warnings
If hiking, aim to start early in the morning
If backpacking and wild camping for one night, aim to start later in the day
Whatever you do, try to miss the peak temperature of the day (often mid afternoon)
Apply suncream. Use a high SPF cream
Know the symptoms of heat stroke
Share your route with others

During the trip:
Seek shelter from the sun and take breaks
Re-apply suncream
