I witnessed a fun little natural spectacle, when 3 little Tawny Owls hatched from the egg in one of the birdboxes on the trees at the edge of a Brabant forest. With minimal interference I managed to take a couple of images of these impressive animals. Tawny Owls are one of the most common Owl species on the European continent. In ancient litterature these creatures are often associated with ghosts and superstition, because of their elusiveness and eery howl and appearance. Once they will be fully grown, these nightly predators will be much more difficult to observe ever again.
I would have been reluctant to come close to the nesting box, if one year earlier I hadn't spoken to a local veterinarian who checks up on all these birdboxes, placed on several strategic locations in and around the forest and told me the do's and don't's. Usually the father watches over the nest from a hiding place, while the mother is resting and comes out to feed the little ones when the coast is clear.
