In early February 2001 I was given a chance to fly to Daytona with Richard Childress, his crew chiefs, and a few other of his top guys. My story angle, how NASCAR teams were using airplanes as a mode of efficiency.
We left Lexington airport, bound for Daytona where we landed at night next to the glow of the Daytona International Speedway under the lights. Along the way, we had some great conversations and even saw the Space Shuttle that had launched from Cape Canaveral as we were roughly around Jacksonville.
It was the rest of the day, not captured on video, that was most memorable. We all went and had a nice dinner at Sushi restaurant, then I stayed the night at Richard's house in Daytona, in what Richard said was Earnhardt's bedroom....before Earnhardt had his own place down there.
