Winter in the Scottish mountains is a completely different proposition.
Snow and ice can make the hills look calm and beautiful, but they hide risks that don’t exist in summer. Routes change, consequences multiply, and small mistakes can become serious very quickly.
In this film, I take my son into the Scottish winter hills to learn from a professional winter mountaineering instructor. This isn’t about chasing summits or adventure for adventure’s sake — it’s about judgement, preparation, and understanding that winter demands a different level of respect.
As a parent, there comes a point where your own experience isn’t enough. Some lessons are too important, and too unforgiving, to pass on alone. Additionally he may be more likely to listen to someone who isn't his dad!! lol
If you’re comfortable hillwalking in summer and thinking about heading into the mountains for the first time in winter, this knowledge isn’t optional.
It’s what keeps people safe — and gets them home.
