SP80 is a Swiss engineering project aiming to break the world sailing speed record by reaching 80 knots (92 mph) using wind power only.
Instead of traditional sails, SP80 uses a high-performance kite paired with a low-drag trimaran hull and a specially engineered underwater foil. This design separates the “wing” from the boat, reducing drag and instability at extreme speeds.
In testing, SP80 has already exceeded 58 knots (67 mph), making it the second-fastest sailcraft ever recorded, behind only Vestas Sailrocket II. Official record attempts are planned for Walvis Bay, Namibia, beginning in 2026.
If successful, SP80 would redefine the limits of wind-powered speed.
