For over ten millennia, the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains have harbored a resilient and adaptive people. To the outside world, this is the heart of Alberta, Canada—a landscape of unmatched rugged beauty and pristine wilderness. But to the Îyârhe Nakoda, this topography is a sacred text written in stone, pine, and water. Long before European surveyors mapped these peaks, this land was named, understood, and deeply revered. Lake Minnewanka is known here as Mînî Wakâ, the Spirit Water—a place where the souls of the past reflect upon the present, and where the mountains themselves stand as eternal guardians of the people.
