The name "Apache" is an exonym; it is derived from the Zuni word apachu, which translates to "enemy," a moniker subsequently adopted by Spanish colonizers. In their own dialects, the various bands refer to themselves using variants of Nde, Diné, or Tinde, simply meaning "The People". Driven further south by pressure from expanding Comanche bands in the 1700s, the Apache carved out a vast, rugged territory across southeastern Arizona, New Mexico, West Texas, and northern Mexico, a region historically termed Apacheria.
