Geronimo led multiple breakouts from San Carlos and the Turkey Creek Reservation, retreating into the rugged, labyrinthine Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico, alongside other great leaders such as Chief Naiche (Cochise's son), Chief Nana, and the famous female warrior Lozen. General George Crook, known as the "Tan Wolf," pursued him relentlessly, but it was General Nelson A. Miles who oversaw the final campaign.
