This is why babies get so much more fussy when they don’t have the chance to use the potty at least some of the time👇
1. Instincts! They’re born with mammal instincts to not soil themselves or you or their “den” (bed).
2. They cry about it! But not retrospectively - “change my diaper!” Nope. They cry BEFORE because they need your help going in the right place (anything-not-diaper). They fuss! If you don’t get the message accurately, they fuss again!
3. Hormones! All mammals (except super old humans or for example my Aussie dog when she was 14 years old) emit a hormone that keeps them clean and dry during sleep. As they wake up, hormone (ADH) wears off, bladder fills, need to pee!
4. Babies know when they are ignoring their instincts and they do not like it. They fuss! A lot! It’s super-disregulating. Shameful. The world seems “wrong” and they feel powerless against it.
5. Babies hold it. They’re born with sphincter control. Ever gone to change a diaper and it was dry? Ever put on a fresh one and they go? They hold it and then they can’t hold it any longer. This is actually painful to hold it too long…so they fuss and finally (possibly shamefully?) ultimately let it out. Fuss!
6. “I love the feel of poop squished against my tender bottom skin” said no baby ever. If you had to sit in your own feces for any length of time, you’d fuss too.
7. Diaper rash sucks. Massive fuss…totally avoidable.
