and days of life. They’re mammals…it makes sense…they aren’t born incontinent. 🤯 Here’s how I did it with baby Marilyn:

STEP 1: from the day she was born, I offered her the potty every time she woke from a nap.

(With a newborn this is about every hour or two.)

STEP 2: I took her diaper off

STEP 3: I put the newborn “top hat potty” between my legs

STEP 4: I held Marilyn over the potty, gently by the thighs, with her back leaning against my torso

STEP 5: I made the “psssss” and grunting cues, alternating

STEP 6: because of hormones and instincts (hello: mammals), she went on the potty EVERY TIME.

STEP 7: anytime I saw the poop face (you know the one ) I’d gently say “wait” and offer the potty, same as above.

STEP 8: within a couple weeks old, Marilyn would look toward me while she made the poop face…an early signal that she needed my help getting her diaper off so she could go in the right place.
