When people come back from long breaks from a hobby, some folks gingerly dip their toes in and test the water; but some people like BassDJ go full send and blow us away with their showing. Arachnotron Invasion is a UDMF, Doom64-ified tech base stuffed to the gills with gorgeous detailing and some clever construction. Most UDMF features are used for detailing here rather than leaning whole parts of the map on them, resulting in something that plays closer to classic Doom 64, and mostly for the better. Arachnotrons are used to dangerous effect here, with Doom 64-ifier (if you have it loaded) meaning you can't run quite as fast or dodge quite as easily.
On UV, I found some of the health and ammo balancing a bit stingy, and secret finding has a huge impact on the swing of balance; if you're not good at sniffing them out you might have a bad time. Outside of that, this map is pretty legit, and we have to remember - this is the FIRST MAP that BassDJ has made in 28 YEARS! If THESE flaws are all we get after a first foray back, then I think we are looking at a mapper with a knack for extreme quality after a couple more of the cobwebs are dusted off.
