We're building New Zealand's first grid-scale battery, at Ruakākā in Te Tai Tokerau Northland.
This 200MWh Battery Energy Storage Site (BESS) will store enough power for roughly 60,000 homes over a two-hour period - helping with those high-use periods in the morning and evening.
It's a big, gutsy project, and to build it we've enlisted some great local companies and local workers.
Batteries, like this one at Ruakākā, will allow us to rely more on low-carbon solar and wind, add resilience to the local network, and ensure we have a more secure power system.
